Turning 65? What You Need to Know About Medicare in Georgia
Turning 65 is an exciting milestone, but it also brings important decisions about your health insurance. If you’re approaching your 65th birthday, understanding your Medicare options can help you avoid costly mistakes and choose coverage that fits your healthcare needs.
At Danielhealth, we’ve been helping Georgia residents navigate Medicare for more than 45 years. Our goal is to make Medicare easy to understand so you can enroll with confidence.
When Should You Enroll in Medicare?
Most people become eligible for Medicare at age 65.
Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) begins three months before your 65th birthday, includes your birthday month, and continues for three months afterward. This seven-month window is often the best time to enroll.
If you’re already receiving Social Security retirement benefits, you may be automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B. If not, you’ll usually need to enroll yourself.
Understanding the Parts of Medicare
Medicare Part A
Helps cover:
- Hospital stays
- Skilled nursing facility care
- Hospice care
- Some home health services
Many people qualify for premium-free Part A if they or their spouse paid Medicare taxes while working.
Medicare Part B
Helps cover:
- Doctor visits
- Outpatient care
- Preventive services
- Lab work
- Medical equipment
Part B has a monthly premium that is set by Medicare and may vary depending on your income.
Medicare Part D
Provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
Even if you don’t currently take medications, enrolling when appropriate may help you avoid future late enrollment penalties if you don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage.
Do You Need a Medicare Supplement?
Original Medicare does not pay all healthcare costs. Many people choose a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy to help pay expenses such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance.
Popular options include:
- Plan G – One of the most comprehensive standardized Medicare Supplement plans available to newly eligible beneficiaries.
Because Medicare Supplement benefits are standardized by plan type, a Plan G from one company generally provides the same core benefits as a Plan G from another company. Premiums, pricing, and customer service may differ.
Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement?
This is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make.
A Medicare Supplement works alongside Original Medicare and helps pay many of Medicare’s remaining costs.
A Medicare Advantage plan is an alternative way to receive your Medicare benefits through a private insurance company and may include additional benefits. Provider networks, costs, and coverage rules vary by plan.
Choosing between these options depends on your healthcare needs, travel habits, preferred doctors, and budget.
Why Work with a Local Medicare Agent?
Medicare can be confusing, especially with enrollment deadlines, supplement choices, and prescription drug plans.
A local licensed Medicare agent can help you:
- Understand your Medicare options
- Compare Medicare Supplement plans
- Review Prescription Drug Plans
- Explain enrollment timelines
- Answer your questions before and after enrollment
Working with an experienced local agent gives you someone you can call when your needs change.
